Ever Get A Rest?

After a day of classes/work I always come back to my dorm room, jump on my bed, and turn on the TV and whip out my laptop. This is my 45 minutes-1 hour to just relax before I start on my studying for the night. During this time I'll catch up on my latest episodes, surf the web, and/or sometimes fall asleep. However, after this break, I still don't feel rejuvenated. While home this weekend, I was surfing the web, as usual, when I came across a quote stating doing nothing is not always pointless. This got me to thinking, I grabbed a blanket and went to go lay outside in my backyard. I laid their and actually relaxed, thought about absolutely nothing and just enjoyed being in my own little world for a bit. This brief fifteen minute period helped me relax and refresh myself way more than my 1 hour I give to myself daily. I, like many people today, spend too much time being invested into the internet, TV shows, and social aspect of my life.   I never really take a quick break from life to think and prioritize, I always have myself on the go. In my opinion, taking time to do absolutely nothing, even for just a few minutes a day, leaves you feeling much more refreshed.

  1. I completely agree with your post! It appears that most people, including myself, are so entrenched in technology that they never get a chance to relax. Texting while walking around makes you miss so many things! You can never really appreciate the natural beauty of this world if you don't stop and look. I feel like the world could benefit from taking a break from technology and discovering who they are as a person before technology shaped them.

  2. Wow i never really thought about it that way. Being a student, i agree I always feel tired and exhausted no matter how much rest i've gotten and I almost never have the enthusiasm to do homework. I always tell myself "I'll just take a short break listen to some light music, maybe catch up on my shows" and then the short hour break turns into 2 hours and just throws me off schedule even more. And afterwards I don't even feel rested, in fact I sometimes lose even the tiny bit of desire I had to study in the first place. But now reading this has made me think....watching a show or listening to light classical music isn't exactly "Resting". Although it sounds like it would be, it's more like procrastination at its finest. It makes sense though, if you want true rest, you must turn off everything round you, any distractions, and if possible go outside if it's nice out and sort of bond with the nature and allow your brain to truly rest. Almost like you would do in YOGA or when meditating. That would be TRUE RESTING! I really enjoyed this short little, thoughtful reading. We are so busy and stressed, its almost normal to be stressed out these days. And we are always surrounded by technology, annoying people, and all other sorts of distractions that we sometimes forget how to actually rest, like people did in the old days before life got so screwed up and complicated. I cannot wait to actually try this out and see how it works for me, I need to do more research on meditating and try it out as well.

  3. That is so true. I know once I get back to my dorm after classes my "break" is watching TV or playing XBOX games. After these things I feel the same way I did before my "resting" time. There are some people who can make this a break or an escape from the stressful world we live in as students. I know during finals week I will not be touching my XBOX but my roommate will be on it to relieve stress. So, I would say for most people getting away from technology is the best way to get away but for some, being on StumbleUpon or YouTube is a good way to take a break.

  4. This post is so true. As much as I love technology, there comes a point when you need to get away from it. Reminds me of saying I hear a lot, "too much of a good thing isn't always good". I find myself taking a break by just walking outside and sitting by a pond or something. That right there will get you feeling refreshed and motivated. I don't think we, as in everybody, do this enough. We are always on the go as you said. If people just took time to take a break, I feel like it could make a huge impact on everyone's day.
